What are they?
They exist out-of-doors, but may come in in huge numbers. Adults are 34-1 inch extended, light amber with 3 dark bands on the skull. They will eat approximately no matter, which, will chew on injured silk and knitwear. House crickets are nighttime, staying hidden throughout the day. They have a characteristic chirping noise. They can be found in temperate places like kitchens, basements, and fireplaces, also in cracks and crevices and at the back baseboard.
House crickets will attack paper, damage silk, woolens, fruits, and vegetables all kinds of foods, and even rubber. However, unless large numbers occur, such damage is usually minor.
Crickets are rather closely related to cockroaches, so have a gradual metamorphosis. The young, or nymphs, look like adults, except that their wings and genitalia are not developed fully.
Get rid of crickets effectively
One way to control crickets is to prebait before they enter the lawn. A chemical treatment program, started early enough, is also effective.
Maxforce Granules is an effective pre-bait chemical that is sprinkled around the yard before a rain. Crickets feeding on these granules would die immediately. However, this is effective only if the crickets have not yet established themselves in the yard. If there are cricket nests already, regular chemical treatment once a month for at least three months is necessary. Orthene Turf WP and Talstar Granules are other popularly used products for controlling crickets. These chemicals are also available in concentrated liquid form, dusts, wettable powders and aerosol forms.
Some other opinions
1. First and foremost know that crickets love to live in tall grasses and moist areas thick with foliage. Ensure that the area around your house and in your yard is not a wonderful breeding ground for these cricket insects. As soon as they like your yard, they will want to check out your house as well. So mow the lawn and ensure that you have plants at least 12 inches away from your walls.
2. But of course, when you throw away the debris, ensure that you have raked it a long distance away from your home.
3. If you have open garbage pails close to your home, then seal them or shut them well. Place or keep your garbage pails at some distance from your home. Crickets love these places and will come by for a visit.
4. The next thing to consider is the cracks in your walls. Seal the cracks, especially those which will allow those bugs to crawl into your home. Use screens in places you can't seal.
5. Crickets also gather in drains and gutters on your roof. So keep these places clean during the summer months.
6. Another thing to consider is the outdoor lighting of your home. These bugs are also attracted to the light. So change from bright lights to low level lights.
